….But I Can Be Happy Now!

October 30th, 2008, by Shelley Riutta

Hello from Shelley!
Welcome to the 62!! (Wow) new subscribers to the newsletter!

The theme of this newsletter is learning to be happy now–despite any challenges you may be experiencing.   In the article below I will share a phrase that can help you make this shift immediately!

This past weekend I visited one of my best friends, Ines, in Chicago.  Niyo (my dog) came along because he is also best friends with her dog, Breezy.

We had so much fun–we went to the Chicago dog beach on Saturday afternoon with the “kids.”  It is right on Lake Michigan–and designated for dogs to run free without leashes.  I called it a Joy Beach—it was so fun to watch all of the dogs play.  For more pictures.

Here is Ines and I at a networking event for women business owners on Friday.

The Fall Life Purpose Mentoring Program is going great–so many breakthroughs and people moving into alignment with their Life Purpose!  Here is feedback from one of the current participants of the program.

“The Life Purpose Program is a breath of fresh air.  I was so stuck in my life.  But after listening to Shelley’s insight and guidance I found myself moving again.  The techniques she suggests are thought provoking and have helped me reconnect with the person that I truly am.  It has only been 2 months and I already I am living a more passionate–purposeful life.  Thank You!

If you would like more information about the next Life Purpose Mentoring Program starting in January (plus info on a special discount you can get if you register by Friday November 14th!) For more information.

……But I Can Be Happy Now
“What we call the secret of happiness is no more a secret than our willingness to choose life. ” Leo Buscaglia

How often do you put off your happiness until some future event occurs?  You can tell that you are doing this– if you have phrases like this going around in your head:

“When I have more money–I will be happy.”
“When I graduate–I will be happy.”
“When my spouse changes–I will be happy.”
“When I lose this weight–I will be happy.”
“When I find my Soulmate–I will be happy.”
“When I redecorate my home–I will be happy.”
“When this awful situation is over–I will be happy.”
“When my kids are happy–I will be happy.”

Notice if you do this in your life.  For many people I work with this is such a routine pattern that they don’t even notice they are doing this.  Making some external condition a source of your happiness is a way to lose sight of your capacity for happiness in this very moment.

I was driving home from Chicago on Sunday and got stuck in traffic.  I had a choice of moving into frustration or opening up to some happiness I could experience in the situation.  Before I had left on my trip- I had thrown some music CD’s into the car that a participant in a presentation I gave a few months ago had made for me.  I decided it would be a good time to listen to one of them.

I put the music in and was immediately transported into such a pure state of happiness.  The music was amazingly beautiful, the sun was shining and Niyo (my dog) was being very sweet with me (the car was at a standstill-so he could be by me).  I could have been there for hours and would not have been bothered at all!

It is the opportunity each of us has in every moment and that is how to open up to the potential happiness RIGHT NOW!  Our lives are made up of these precious moments that I can be wasted if we have our mind set on something needing to be different for us to be happy.

If this is a pattern for you—(I know it has been for me!) a phrase that can help you shift this around is when you find yourself saying “I will be happy when this happens—”.  You can counter yourself with saying “But I can be happy NOW.”

This powerful phrase can help shift you out of the future and affirms the truth of the vast opportunity for happiness right this moment.  It also can loosen your belief that your happiness is a function of external events happening around you–and is more of a function of your choice to embrace it right now–right where you are–just as things are.

Niyo’s Tip of the Week
Niyo is my almost 5 year old Golden Retriever!  Here is his message for this issue of the newsletter!

“Can You Believe I Used to Be This Little!!”

“Here I am when I was just a few months old! My Mom says I look like little stuffed animal.  When my Mom brought me home it was in the Winter just after Christmas.  I was so curious about her house when I got there I walked around and sniffed everything.  About half way around the house I got so tired I fell asleep!

”Later that night she put me in a big crate that was VERY scary for me–it was big and lonely–I missed all of my brothers and sisters–so I cried REALLY loud.  My Mom felt so sad for me she came in the kitchen by me and let me out of the crate.  She slept on the kitchen floor by me and I got to crawl all over her during the night–that was fun!

My Mom says she can’t believe it has almost been 5 years already that I have been with her!  My Birthday is on Friday–on Halloween!  She says that she is going to dress me up for my Birthday and send a picture to all of you.

She also said she is also doing something special to celebrate my Birthday called a Sale–I don’t know what that means but she says it is something very nice.  For more information on this “Sale”.

Chicago, Chicago

October 28th, 2008, by Shelley Riutta

This past weekend I went to visit one of my Best friends, Ines, in Chicago. On Saturday we went to the Chicago Dog Beach on Lake Michigan (The Midwest Ocean:) Here is my dog, Niyo, so excited that he is at a beach! He is running to me saying “Mom, can you believe it–how cool it is here!” Ines’s dog, Breezy, is the white dog in the background.

Ines throwing a ball out into the water for the dogs.

The dogs running back in from “catching” the ball.

Niyo asking “Where is the ball?” and it is right under him:)

Ines so happy to be at the dog beach!!

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

October 15th, 2008, by Shelley Riutta

Hello from Shelley!
Welcome to the 21 new subscribers to the newsletter!

The theme of this newsletter is turning challenges into opportunities.  The state of the economy is rattling many peoples cages right now- and it is important to think about how you are responding to this. In the article of this issue I will go into depth about this.

This past weekend I gave two presentations at an all day Conference for Women hosted by Theda Care Hospital.  There were over 300 women who attended the event.  Here I am at my Radiant Life Counseling booth.

I gave one presentation on Simplicity for over 100 people and a Joy presentation to about 60 people.  They were really fun groups of women!

The most special part of the day was having my Mom be my assistant for the day.  She has been visiting for the last few weeks helping me with my business –because I have been so busy.

I had her come up and do a demonstation of an exercise in the Joy Presentation–that was FUN!  She is an amazing woman and a big part of why I am where I am at in my life today—thank you Mom for all your love and support!

Well the energy around London is still moving for me.  During the last few weeks some exciting opportunities have come up for me to travel back there in the hopefully not too distant future.  I will keep you posted!

Warmly-

Shelley

Turning Challenges into Opportunities
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” Victor Frankl

“The key to change….is to let go of fear”  Roseanne Cash

What do you do in the face of challenge and uncertainty?  Do you get immobolized by fear and sink into negativity? Or do you look at challenges as a springboard to opportunity and growth?

Our mindset in the face of challenge will dictate our experience of the challenge.  It always amazes me that in just a brief moment we can shift our perspective of a situation and completely transform the experience.  How amazing is that!  Such power we have moment by moment to shape our experiences in life.  No one has this control to create this shift but you.

If we look at your reaction to the economic changes–what perspective are you choosing?  Is it fear based–”The world is falling apart and it is just going to get worse–I am unsafe.”  or “We are going through a huge transformation and I know wonderful things are going to come from it–I am excited to see what good will come from this.”

One of my favorite Workshops that I do is “The Joy Workshop” (Which I would recommend for practically everyone right now because of the reactions I am seeing to the economic gyrations).

One of the things that I talk about in the Workshop is how challenging people or events around us can be opportunities to practice staying in our own emotional state.  So many of us let situations and others around us determine how we feel moment by moment.

Instead we all need to determine how we want to feel througout the day and stick with this–NO MATTER WHAT.  To put it simply—do you want to be a Thermoter (mirroring the tempature of those around you)–or a Thermostat (putting your setting where you want it to be)?

Now more than ever this is something you can be practicing.  Decide what perspective you would like to take on what is happening in the economy–a fear perspective or a faith perspective.

One of the opportunites of this current transformation is that we can start to get more deeply that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.  Money and material items do not create safety and security for us.

Our security is in the truth that we are eternal spiritual beings who are always safe each and every moment.  Harm can come to us on the physical level–but we cannot be harmed or destroyed on the spiritual level–this part of us lives on.

I remember attending a Workshop were the presenter gave this quote “Most people think they are drowning in an ocean of water—when in reality they are just in a wading pool.”

So don’t buy into the current belief that right now we are all drowning in an ocean of crisis—instead remind yourself and others that we are in a wading pool–and we are capable of navigating this calmly and successfully!

Niyo’s Tip of the Week
Niyo is my four year old Golden Retriever!  Here is his message for this issue of the newsletter!

“I love my Auntie Vanessa”

“One of my favorite people in the world is my Auntie Vanessa.  She came to visit me this last weekend and we had so much fun!  We played, cuddled and walked.

Every time she comes we do one of my favorite things—which is getting a bath (see picture).  In the picture I am so happy I am with her–she is so loving and nice to me.  I was so sad when she left–I miss you Auntie Vanessa!  I hope you have someone in your life you love as much as I love her.”
